Our Story
THE HISTORY OF BUNDUNG GALAXY FOOTBALL ACADEMY:
My name is Nana Kofi Mahlangu, the manager / coordinator for Bundung Galaxy Football Academy.
In 2015, I was staying in Bundung, Serrekuda, 🇬🇲 Whilst walking back to where I was staying, I saw some young people playing football, so I stopped to watch them. When they finished playing, one of the young people came and asked me to sponsor them. We had no conversation. I was a bit taken a back. I can not recall what I said to him, but it might have something like okay.
Living behind where the people were playing in the street was the Anthony Mendy, whom I had met, due to the fact he is an electrician and he came to the compound to work on the house where I was staying. Anthony was an amateur footballer and as he was much older than these young people, we agreed that he would coach them.
A couple of days later, we went to Banjul to buy football kits for about 12 players. I was a bit low on cash, so I used my credit card. I had some football boots that I had sent over in advance. I gave them the football boots and other bits and pieces such books.
I asked the young people what was the name of the football team and they said Bundung United. I then asked them to change the name to Bundung Galaxy Football Club. I think Anthony Mendy, the coach, changed it to Bundung Galaxy Football Academy.
I discussed with Anthony my vision for the young people. I wanted them to learn to read, write, and communicate with mathematics. This I felt was very important for their development. Part of my reason is that if any of them become professional footballers, then they are going to need to read the contracts.
On my return to the UK, I went to the local sports shop and purchased the following books, footballs, training bits, football boots, training bibs, training cones, whistle, etc, and sent it over to them.
Between 2024 and 2025, we played numerous tournaments. This includes going to the ex-president village.
In 2024, Anthony’s house got burned down, and he not only lost his personal belongings but the football team kits and other items belonging to the club. With the help of J K Freight and Shipping Ltd, I sent him some personal stuff and items for the club.
Whenever Bundung Galaxy FA played against other teams, they had to play with their bibs or borrowed other teams’ kits.
In October of 2025, Anthony came on my Monday Rising show on GalaxyAfiwe.net Radio Station to appeal for funds. A listener called me after the interview and gave me £400.00 to buy football kits for the team and also £200 for GalaxyAfiwe.net Radio Station.
How we spent the money:
We bought 24 kits for the senior team and 16 kits for the junior team. We paid for the Gambian Football Federation 3rd division qualifier. We registered with the Gambian Football Federation on the 23rd of December 2025.
Bundung Galaxy FA now begins their quest to join the Gambian Football Federation 3rd division by entering a qualifying round. There are two groups of four teams, then a three team knockout stage. We won our group and drew the first match in the knockout stage. Unfortunately, we lost the next game and was knocked out. But there is next year. We will try again.
For details of each game, see the match report.
